Washington, D.C. – United Medical Center (UMC) has announced the appointment of Dr. Eric Li as the new chairman of the hospital’s Department of Pathology succeeding Dr. David Reagin who retired after 40 years of service at the hospital.
Dr. Li is a highly regarded pathologist whose background includes experience as the director of the Department of Pathology at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, N.Y. and previously as the director of the Department of Pathology at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, in Ogdensburg, N.Y. He also was an assistant professor of pathology at New York University Medical Center in New York City and an attending pathologist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
His clinical and postgraduate training included a fellowship at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, and residencies at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Conn. He is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomical Pathology and Clinical Pathology.
He earned his M.D. degree from Peking Union Medical College, which is generally considered the best medical school in China. He is the co-author of several published research articles.

“My goal is to maintain a positive collaborative work environment in which we help each other and the whole hospital,” he says. “I intend that the Pathology Department will grow and achieve great success. We wish to promote the highest standards of performance, quality control and quality assurance. I believe in science, and we will acquire new technology so that we can improve service to the hospital.”
Dr. Li says he ascribes to the principles of the Chinese philosopher Laozi, who lived in the sixth century B.C. Laozi stated, “As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, the people honor and praise. The next, the people hate and despise. When the leaders’ work is done, the people will say, ‘We did it ourselves.’”
