WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Not-for-Profit Hospital Corporation (commonly known as United Medical Center (UMC), announced today that UMC’s Department of Radiology was surveyed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and was again awarded full accreditation under the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA).
Like The Joint Commission, MQSA accreditation is a federal government requirement for all hospitals and providers of mammography and UMC meets national standards for radiation emitting procedures. Congress enacted MQSA a quarter century ago to ensure that all women have access to quality mammography for the detection of breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. UMC Radiology embraces the public health success story of mammography and the high standards required by the FDA.
“The UMC mammography system uses photon counting technology which provides the highest resolution images at the lowest radiation dose of any system,” noted Raymond K. Tu, M.D., M.S., F.A.C.R. Chairman of Radiology Services at UMC. “UMC Department of Radiology is fully accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Our radiology staff is committed to serving the health care needs of all District of Columbia residents particularly those at the East End of the City in Wards 7 and 8.”
“UMC is proud of the results of our mammography accreditation efforts,” noted UMC Board Chair LaRuby May. “To receive full accreditation on the heels of our Joint Commission accreditation further cements our efforts to continue to strive toward delivering a high quality of healthcare to Ward 7 and 8 residents.” About United Medical Center (UMC)The Not-for-Profit Hospital Corporation, commonly known as United Medical Center, is a hospital that is an instrumentality of the District of Columbia government serving Southeast DC and surrounding Maryland communities.
